WAHU SURFER GROMS COMP GOES OFF AT MOANA BEACH
(Moana Beach, SA – Saturday, 5th December 2009): The 2009 South Australian Wahu Surfer Groms Comp went off with a huge bang on Saturday with almost thirty competitors hitting the waves.
Competitors were all aged under 15, making this the youngest national surfing series in Australia.
The waves at Moana beach were perfect for the grommets, at 0.5 of a metre and light variable winds made the perfect platform for a great days competition.
Nathan Angelakis, shredded the small surf in the under 15 boys putting together a combined wave total of 13.93 over Rylee Smith and Jeremy Enright.
"I am pretty happy to win my first comp, it was fun," said Angelakis.
The under 13 boys was also a hot division. In the end the scores were tallied across the day with Zac Ryan of Goolwa a convincing winner with 32.13 points out of a possible 40. Zac beat Alfred Churchill, Matt Zailkaukass, Quinn Thurtell and Issac Rudd.
"After all of the comps that I have done this year, it is great to win one," said Ryan. "The waves were a bit small but it was still pretty fun."
The youngest division in the competition was the under nines. In the boys Alex Parker was too good for, Deklin Padovani, Daniel Pollard and Taylor Bradley. Alex pulled in to a rare Moana Barrel, which is extremely impressive for the under nines.
"That was the second barrel that I have ever caught, so I am pretty happy," said Parker.
The girls divisions were also extremely impressive, with most of the girls being involved in Surfing South Australia's girls development squad, the future on female surfing in South Australia is bright.
The under 13's division was taken out by Ellie Francis, whose cumulative heat totals was 25.77 out of 40. Ellie beat Tayla Hanak and Hannah Maddison Tennant.
"That was only the second competition that I have been in, so I am glad to win," said Francis.
Hannah Maddison Tennant also took out the under nine girls, whilst Alfred Churchill took out the bodyboarding division.
The Wahu Surfer Groms Comps next move onto the Gold Coast in mid December and is proudly supported by Surfing Australia and all of the individual state branches.
